East Devon Scouts Best in the kitchen

21 March 2017

Scouts from Beer and Seaton Scout groups have been practising hard for weeks for the Devon scouting equivalent of TV’s Master Chef.
The competition challenged young people to cook a three course meal using a 2 ring gas burner, in 2 hours for 4 people on a budget of only £17. The other limitation was to only use a small amount of pans to cook with. As any chef would agree it’s a difficult task.
A team of independent judges watched as the youngsters prepared, cooked and presented their meals, paying close attention to safe food handling, team work, originality, taste and quality of the dishes and importantly, good washing up skills!
The theme was “Scout Badges Past, Present or Future” the Beer team of Kendal, Isla, Dylan and Adam created a new badge called “Friend of the Sea” all to do with the environment, the sea and fish.
All of the courses followed a fish theme with a Crab and avocado starter, followed by home made fish fingers in the ultimate fish finger sandwich and the meal ended with a fish shaped pancake with nectarine scales.
Seaton Scouts Headed up by team leader Ben opted for the existing World Challenge. The homemade pea soup to start followed by a goat chilli and the meal ended with bananas and hand made ice cream.
Both teams have proved what it takes to beat the other scout teams from across Devon by Beer Scouts claiming 1st place and Seaton Scouts taking 2nd place and the Best Desert award.
Andy Williams an outdoor catering specialist said “I have had an excellent experience judging the teams. They produced really tasty food with such limited equipment I was amazed at the skill level”
Rosie Beer another chief and judge said “The scouts produced fantastic food which was a pleasure to judge. The calm manor in which the young people executed the task was a pleasure to watch.”
Dylan from the Beer team said “ I was nervous before we started but I was really happy when we won”

Both teams will now go forward to represent Devon in the South West Regional Competition.
